Explore Adria On An Italian River Cruise

If you’re looking for a getaway that offers culture, incredible landscapes, and plenty of time to relax, nothing beats an Italian river cruise. The waterways of Italy were once the beating heart of the country’s trade, and many of them lead to the watery gem that is Venice. Exploring the region’s canals is a great way to immerse yourself in the history of the place and get to learn a bit about the many cultures that influence Italy today.

There are a number of routes from which to choose, but one of the most captivating has to be an Italian river cruise that begins in the Renaissance city of Mantua and winds its way through the Po Valley towards bustling Venice. You’ll also get to explore Adria, a beautiful town steeped in history and architectural beauty.

The picturesque town of Adria isn’t just a pretty face - it’s got a fascinating life story. First founded by the Etruscans it later became a Roman town and was soon a prosperous port on the Adriatic sea - to which it gave its name. Today, it’s more of an agricultural centre, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit.

If you’re looking for a bit of history on your Italian river cruise, Adria is a must-see. It has a wonderful museum with antiques and archaeological wonders as well as a beautiful 18th-century cathedral.

Places to Visit

The Archaeological Museum

Thanks to the long existence of the port town, many artefacts from the past have been discovered in the area and preserved in this excellent exhibition. You’ll find many remains of the ancient 6th-century settlement that was around when Adria was a flourishing port. Attic vases painted with dynamic scenes were brought over by the Greeks, while you’ll also find valuable Etruscan remnants. But it’s the jewellery belonging to this civilisation that captures the imagination, which includes golden earrings, drop pendants and necklaces.

Adria Cathedral

The Cathedral itself may be fairly new, although it was built on the site of a 14th-century church, but it’s what’s inside that counts. When archaeologists carried out work to investigate the foundations, they discovered a Byzantine crypt and frescoes. You’ll also be able to see a Byzantine bas-relief that dates back to the 6th-century and a beautifully carved sacristy. Not only is it a great sight to see but the Cathedral also offers some cool respite from the Italian summer heat.

There’s no better way to explore a region’s history than on an Italian river cruise. Not only will you better immerse yourself in the landscape and culture of the place, but you’ll be able to explore at a slower and more relaxing pace. It’s the perfect break for history buffs and chill-seekers alike. What are you waiting for?
