Heading to Val Thorens for some skiing fun? For any fanatic skier, seeking out the most renowned runs in a resort is one of the first tasks. Luckily, there are bound to be some pretty sweet (and some truly legendary) runs right on the doorstep of your catered chalet - Val Thorens is an exceptional ski area, after all.The resort is expansive and well configured. What’s more, because 99% of the runs are above 2000m, great snow conditions are pretty much guaranteed for most of the season. With 150 kilometres of slopes to explore, you’ll want to prepare an itinerary so you don’t waste any time.
What counts as a legendary run?
A run can be legendary for:
The views: mind-blowing panoramas on the pistes and at the summits, or a couloir that rolls over the mountain alongside rivers, gorges and valleys.
The atmosphere: whether it’s peaceful or buzzing, some slopes are extra special.
Its history: you can get a good kick out of knowing that you’re following in the tracks of past pros.
Its challenge: you need real skill to traverse certain routes and the harder your heart
pumps, the more thrilling and rewarding the adventure. No matter where you choose your catered chalet, Val Thorens promises to have one of these legendary pistes right at your doorstep.
Boismint and Plan de l’Eau
The red run between the Boismint and Plan de l’Eau chairlifts is top of the highlights that you won’t want to miss. Varied, wide and usually sunny, it’s a favourite of local ProRiders but is often neglected by tourists. Go in the morning to take advantage of the freshly groomed snow.
Les Asters
North-facing and jaw-droppingly beautiful, you’re sure to have great conditions on the red run at Les Asters.
Begin at the top of the Thorens Funitel to take in the panoramic views over the glaciers before heading into the valley for the start of the run. Be prepared for a change of pace: the piste starts off steep and then switches it up a couple of times, making for some large flat breaks. One short section is an especially big drop, so you have been warned!
Pointe de la Masse
If you’ve got the skills and can handle some of the steepest slopes around, head over to the three black runs at Pointe de la Masse:
Lac Noir (Black Lake)
Rocher Noir (Black Rock)
Dame Blache (White Lady)
The best time to go to this area is early in the day, as the long pistes usually catch beautiful morning sun.
Blanchot and Tetras
Not all legendary runs require blood, sweat and tears to get through. In the Boismint area you’ll discover a 1000-metre vertical drop of continuous, beautiful blue runs. The Blanchot and Tetras pistes are wide and their winding turns link together seamlessly: you’ll have a lot of fun with this one.
Combe de Caron
Those on a quest for an adrenaline rush will love the panoramic skiing in the Caron area. The summit soars at 3,200 metres, and from that spectacular viewpoint you’ll be able to look out over more than a thousand summits in the French, Italian and Swiss Alps. Incredible as that sounds, you will need to be highly skilled to make your way down from the top. Technical mastery is required to get through the steep start, expansive valleys and narrow sections.
If you check out any of these legendary runs, your ski trip will be all the more memorable for it. There is bound to be one not far from your catered chalet. Val Thorens is so huge, you’ll want to come back again and again to rediscover the mountain.
Last piece of advice: to get the most bang for your buck, it’s a good idea to book with a reputable ski company when choosing a catered chalet. Val Thorens has plenty of options and you want your accommodation to be as epic as your skiing time.
