Eating Out In The Val Thorens Valley

Val Thorens is one of the most famous French ski resorts and there are plenty of reasons that have afforded it this reputation, including fabulous skiing, wonderful off piste facilities and some amazing eateries. Sure, when you’re staying in a catered chalet, Val Thorens’ restaurants might not be high on your agenda, but remember, your chalet host does get a night off when you are expected to fend for yourself. Plus, you may want to eat out at lunchtime, so it’s a good idea to research some of the restaurants that are worth visiting. All budgets and tastes are catered for and the wide range of options include all manner of cuisines. Here are some of our favourites.

Lunchtime Mountain Restaurants

A big tip when it comes to eating mid-ski is to head for a spot that advertises ‘plat de jour’, or dish of the day. These tend to be simple, tasty meals made from locally sourced meats, potatoes and veg - perfect fuel for an afternoon back on the slopes. They are often well priced too, but if you prefer to treat yourself to a swankier dining experience, you will be pleasantly surprised!

Chalet de la Marine has a Michelin Star chef, Romuald Fassenet, who serves up a delightful fusion of traditional and fancy French cuisine. If you love the idea of this spot but prefer not to spend so much, head for the Bistro de la Marine, which has a range of delicious self-service snacks. Getting here is easy; all you need to do is take the Cascades chair lift and head down the blue run Les Dalles!

La Folie Douce is an institution in itself and while many know it more for its party après ski scene, it would be remiss of us not to mention the charming little restaurant it hides away. The ideal spot for lunch with a view, its menu is small but fresh and the atmosphere is classic ‘ski holiday’.

Other lunch options include Les Aiguilles de Péclet, with its self-service or table service eaterie, and Chez Pepe Nicholas, below Val Thorens off the Piste de la Chasse. The latter is typically French and an authentic find if you prefer to head away from the crowds.

Evening Eating

For a real change from the food in your catered chalet, Val Thorens’ Le Blanchot is a great local option. Boasting a quaint ambiance, their menu bursts with local specialities. When in the mountains you will find that cheese features in many dishes. It is a staple on Savoyarde tables and if you really want to embrace the culture, a meal at La Laiterie is a must. The fondue made with Champagne is a triumph.

If it’s cosy you are after, then La Ferme de Reberty further down the valley in Les Menuires is lovely. Great food, charming decor and a delightful atmosphere make for a winning combination here.

Of course, if you just want something quick and simple when you’re eating away from your catered chalet, Val Thorens has plenty of choice when it comes to Italian and pizza restaurants. Face West and La Maisons are two of the favourites.

Upmarket eateries include Les Explorateurs in the Pashmina Hotel, with its one Michelin star, and La Bouitte in the tiny village of St Marcel, which boasts three Michelin stars to date.

We have really only touched the sides here when it comes to excellent places to dine away from your catered chalet in Val Thorens. Every taste and budget is catered for and whether you fancy a steak, a pizza or a simple salad, you’re in luck. Booking in advance is very much recommended as the best places fill up quickly. You should be able to book before you even travel if you ask your tour operator to do it for you. This is one of the advantages of booking your ski trip with a reputable company who will go that extra mile to make your holiday even more memorable.
